It is a great and healing climb to get to the top of Mulanje Mountain, it is one of those experience that remain in our mind forever. It takes about three days to get to Sapitwa peak and this is just on the average climb. There are many factors that can increase or decrease the number of days to get to the highest peak and they are as follows;
Fitness - in my
first days of hiking while I was at the top of the mountain, I come across this
marathon runner from Italy at Chisepo hut and just a reminder to get to Chisepo
hut it takes about two days, I asked him when did you arrive at the hut and he
said just a few minutes ago and we (him and his guide) will only be here for
the next few minutes then we are continuing with the hike to Sapitwa peak and
hopeful get back down on this very same day. And at the end of the day they
really did accomplish their goal. Now this guy just said he runs 42km and that’s
just a clear explanation of how he managed to do so in a day. According to my
experience with many of the hikers, to get to the first hut on the mountain it
takes about 3 hours and others 5 hours which means when you start hiking at 6am
you will probably get to Chambe hut at 12noon. You can choose to camp at chamber
hut or proceed to Chisepo hut.
Weather – it is always a great idea to start hiking the
mountain just before the sun rises as temperatures dramatically rises, to enjoy
the hike I found out that early hours to notice many breath taking things like
the songs of the morning birds, the amazing sun rise and there is some sense of
calming peace that makes you one with nature and this is exactly where nature
provides you with answers. Sometimes it does rain in the mountain, our guides
have a lot of experience with the mountain and will take you to the nearest hut
for shelter.
Safety – hiking is all about the great experience, it’s good
to experience those moments in time where you need to look back at them and appreciate
your time with nature. Climbing the Mulanje Mountain is not always smooth,
there are areas that are challenging and one needs to take things slow for
example there are other places that are too rocky and others just too steep,
river crossing and so many other things, I always remind myself that hiking is
note a competition but it’s the experience. Talking about competition, once
every year Mulanje mountain holds a race locally called the porters race where there
is a route that is about 25km going up part of the mountain and back down, the
winner of the race last year 2023 time was 2hours 15minutes, I will be posting
soon when the next race will be.
